Who Cares About LinkedIn Security

Bishop Fox goes into detail why LinkedIn’s new Intro service is a bad idea. Cory Scott of LinkedIn responds.

I think LinkedIn is among the most disgusting, hostile, deceitful and technologically malignant services available. If you use it, their security is probably the least of your worries.1

But, it’s already too late. They have your data and will not give it up.

I deleted my account two years ago because they lacked any sense of responsibility for the users. Today, I still receive LinkedIn requests because they are still showing me as a suggested contact. That means, that they still retained everything I entered that could be used as meta data. They also still retain my email address. That email address is still used actively by their referral system. There is no way to turn notifications off because I “deleted” my account.

LinkedIn can pledge all they want. In my experience they simply do not care about users of the system beyond scraping and disbursing their data.

  1. The consequence for poor security is so insignificant, it’s almost not a consequence. It certainly is not much of a motivator. ↩︎
