Bang On Update, Now With Less Duck

Bang On is an iOS app for performing quick searches on the web. When it was introduced, it was the fastest way to do a DuckDuckGo search from apps like Launch Center Pro. This latest update removes support for DuckDuckGo.

It’s not clear why support was dropped but the release notes have a mysterious statement from the developer:

Bang On now allows you to choose between two popular default search engines. (If you liked the less-popular search engine Bang On used before, I’m sorry. I liked it too.)

But the clever DDG bang syntax is not lost with this update. Instead Bang On is performing the same search using the user selected engine. For example, the !beer query still searches BeerAdvocate.com.

Overall, I still really like Bang On. It’s a great app for what it does. The loss of DuckDuckGo is a bummer, but the bang syntax still works just as well for shortcuting complex queries. The custom bang support is still there and the list of built-in options is enormous.

It’s a one-stop-shop for quick queries and even comes with type-ahead suggestions. Works on iPhone and iPad.
