MyRadar for iOS
Here on the hemisphere I inhabit, it’s winter, which means bad weather is the norm. While I like a simple weather app as much as the next faux-designer I also like to know how bad my day is going to get. MyRadar Pro is an old iPhone weather app that was just redesigned for iOS7 and it’s not too shabby.
The primary purpose of MyRadar is to provide a simple weather radar. It’s functional and not nearly as pretty as Dark Sky, but it is accurate.
MyRadar is an odd dichotomy. The radar view and the settings screen are right out of 2009. The buttons are overly shiny and the controls too small. But if you pull down the forecast view, it looks right at home on iOS7 and is quite attractive while packed with information.
For $2 it’s right in line with most of the other good weather apps. For an additional $7 of in app purchase you can also get weather warning notifications and hurricane tracking.
There are some odd parts of MyRadar beyond the designs. There is a somewhat interesting social overlay. Photos posted to MyRadar can be displayed on the map. It’s entertaining enough when there’s heavy snow or some other major weather event, but boring the rest of the time.
There’s also an interesting use of the weather map. When the center of the map is moved, the current weather forecast is updated to reflect the location of the center. I enjoyed moving navigating around the map to see how the temperature and forecast changed in my local area. On the other hand, it was annoying when I just wanted to see a different area of the map and retain my own forecast.
