ProtonMail launches standalone iOS app | Computerworld Proton’s VPN routes users through encrypted tunnels, and the VPN app for iOS supports advanced security features, such as Secure Core, which passes mobile user traffic through multiple servers (325 servers are available) to defend against bad actors attempting to trace mobile IP addresses, and Tor via VPN. The new app also uses the latest Internet Key Exchange (IKEv2) protocol, which provides for higher speeds and stability on a VPN network.

A Very Good Review of the New 2018 MacBook Air

This review over at Robservatory is one of the best I’ve seen. In a nutshell, the new machine crushed the other two—nearly eleven hours remaining, against 2.5 for the old Air and just over six for the MacBook Pro. The short run time for the 2012 Air, with its smaller 35 watt-hour battery, isn’t overly surprising (though 3.5 hours of total usage time is quite short). The 2013 MacBook Pro, though, has a 50 watt-hour battery…yet the new Air’s smaller 35 watt-hour battery has no trouble outlasting it.

1Writer Updated for iOS 12

I’ve linked to 1Writer several times in the past week but not specifically called out the iOS 12 update released last week. The update was not a major overhaul but did add the following notable features: Support for Siri Shortcut actions for creating or opening documents There’s now a “favorites” and “trash” folder in the 1Writer sidebar Wiki linking is now possible within 1Writer Clickable links in edit mode 1Writer already had a “Recent” folder that I used regularly.

A Siri Shortcut to Tell Me What to Say to Siri

I’m still not completely comfortable with Siri Shortcuts. They come with a bit of embarrassment in public places and occasionally fail to actually run. But, I can already tell that this is the future of interacting with my mobile device.1 My problem soon became that I had more Siri shortcut phrases than I could remember. It’s a bigger problem than remembering keyboard shortcuts for me, because I can’t develop spatial memory that makes it automatic to trigger without remembering the exact phrasing.

Writing for Macdrifter on the iPad Pro

I write everything for this site in MultiMarkdown. Text is pretty easy to create on iOS but some of the subtleties of creating images and working with my Pelican host is more difficult than on a Mac. Here are a few of the apps I use to make it easier with the iPad Pro. Text Editing Drafts I often use Drafts to quickly start a blog post. I don’t like to store text in Drafts because it’s hard to get to it from my Mac.

Moving Text Between Drafts and DEVONthink To Go with Shortcuts

I’m still looking for a convenient way to edit text files that I archive in DEVONthink To Go. While I love the organization and intelligent search in DEVONthink the built-in text editor is anemic. I developed a pair of Shortcuts that move text between Drafts and DEVONthink. The first Shortcut is used when send text out of DEVONthink To Go and primarily deals with the mish-mash of data that comes along with the plain text on iOS.

11 Years Gone

I still miss the mind of Kurt Vonnegut. His ideas shaped my own. Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance. Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus I think of that idea often. It explains the state of the world. How did we go from Obama to Trump? That’s captured right there in Kurt’s sentence. Humans are motivated to create change but not to sustain it.

iPad Pro 2018 Gut Reaction

After less than 24 hours with iPad Pro, here are the reactions I’d give anyone considering an upgrade. TL;DR: The 12.9" is still huge, the pencil is better, and the keyboard case is a big improvement. It’s a pro-level iPad that’s more than most people need. Size I upgraded from the 10.5" iPad Pro to the new 12.9" iPad Pro. While we have a first generation 12.9" in the house, it was still shocking how big this new iPad Pro is.

Standing still. iPad Pro 2018

Speaking of independent Apple blogging, it’s nice to see that Thomas Verschoren is back at it. Standing still. iPad Pro 2018 But, even with all those new bells and whistles, it’s still the same iPad running the same iOS. It’s an iPad. A device that was perfect when it was released. And then kinda rested on its laurels and iterated with safe bets and predictable improvements I ordered the new iPad Pro (12.

Daring Fireball Dan Frakes Goes to Apple as Mac App Store Editor

Daring Fireball: Dan Frakes Goes to Apple as Mac App Store Editor The talent pool writing about Apple products and platforms from outside the company’s walls is getting noticeably shallower. And on a personal level, this trend is not good for me, because I can’t link to App Store articles, because they’re not on the web. I agree with John completely. I’m not sure if John is talking about blogs or professional web publications though.
