Moving from a Drobo to a Synology NAS

I’ve been using a Drobo connected a Mac Mini server for about 5 years. It’s performed well and I have not had a single complaint about the device. I’ve had at least six disk failures and the Drobo handled them like a champ. But things die and I like to be prepared. I expect this Drobo is not long for this world and I wanted to go with a standalone NAS device instead of a shared drive on a server.

A Dial-up Modem Conversation Link

I still get a little excited when I hear a modem connecting because that’s how I discovered the world as a kid. I finally know what they were talking about.

The Matias Laptop Pro Compact Keyboard Link

I could get into this new keyboard from Matias. I think it’s really smart that they actually include embedded audio comparisons of the Laptop Pro with their older keyboard, the Tactile Pro. To be honest, the keyboard on my MacBook Pro macs letters appear just fine. I think the Das Keyboard was the best feeling keyboard I’ve owned but far too loud for any kind of shared environment. I’m a big fan of my Logitech K760’s Bluetooth switch and would want that option on every Bluetooth keyboard in the future.

Some Stationery Pornography

I really like the Pelle journals. The biggest selling point for me is the thick paper stock. The ruled and plain notebooks are 28lb. linen paper and the drawing pads are 80lb. textured linen paper. These are perhaps the nicest little notebooks I’ve ever tried. I use the Pelle journals without a special cover but I bought this gorgeous leather binder as a gift for someone that really doesn’t care about notebooks.

From iMac to MacBook

This article is boring. That is, it’s boring for anyone who is not considering moving from a 27" iMac to a 15" MacBook Pro. For someone who is, this post may be just what they are looking for.1 The pain in moving is not just packing everything up and shlepping it to a new location. The real pain is trying to make the new place feel like home.2 As with houses, so goes computers.

Bad USB on a Thunderbolt Display

What happens when you connect a bad USB hub or cable to a Thunderbolt Display? Lot’s of stuff. After setting up the display, I connected a FireWire 800 drive to the display1 and a USB3 drive to to the MacBook Pro.2 I experienced two kernel panics the first day. I also noticed that I could no longer restart while the Thunderbolt Display was connected. Finally, I started to notice that Spotlight services were not working properly.

Some Cheap-Ass Laser Pointers, An Essay

I used the same presentation laser pointer for about nine years, through job interviews, a career as a scientist and into a new career in informatics. It was a moderately priced red (650nm) laser that I had grown attached to over the years. 18 months ago the lens was nocked out of alignment and I ended up with a laser smear. As a gift, my wife bought me a very nice green (532nm) laser pointer.

The Best Electric Kettle

I’ve owned many electric kettles in my day. Most were utter crap. But two have really stood up to repeated use and have great features.1 The best is the [Cuisinart CPK-17][kettle]. It’s a big boy, holding 1.7L but it also heats a full pot in just a few minutes. The two best features of this kettle are the variable temperature settings and the Keep Warm function. The variable temperature is accurate enough (less the 5 deg.

My Commuter iPhone Setup

I commute over 90 minutes a day by car.1 I spend most of that time listening to podcasts and audiobooks on my iPhone. While my car has Bluetooth connectivity and supports incoming and outgoing calls, it does not support streaming audio. To remedy this problem, I waded through six different bluetooth-to-3.5mm stereo jack adapters. Five of them sucked. The Belkin Bluetooth Kit is great. Bluetooth Setup The Belkin BT Kit is $89 on Amazon2 but it’s listed for $80 on the Belkin product page.
