A Teenager's View of Social Media Link

This is a pretty interesting read for us old people. In short, many have nailed this on the head. It’s dead to us. Facebook is something we all got in middle school because it was cool but now is seen as an awkward family dinner party we can’t really leave. … That being said, if you don’t have Facebook, that’s even more weird and annoying. What I find most interesting are how people manage the glut of social outlets.

Nerds on Draft Yang and Side Projects Link

On the recent episode (15) of Nerds on Draft Jeff and I crack open a Yang from Evil Twin Brewing and talk about the joy, dread, and guilt of side projects. We’re not fans of using energy levels for scheduling work but we are fans of planning our leisure time. Check out the show notes for links to Yang. It’s super bitter.

The Speed of Tie Fighters and Blaster Bolts Link

I love this kind of thinking. Whether it’s correct or not is irrelevant because it’s all make believe anyway. The kid from my childhood that loved Fangoria magazine would’ve plastered this article all over his bedroom.

Piraat and Glassware Link

The latest Nerds on Draft is out. Spoiler: We like Piraat and are skeptical of the virtues of specialty glassware. I’m also doubtful that custom cereal bowls make Mini-Wheats taste better. But beer glasses are more fun to test.

AppSanta 2014 Sale Link

Man, that’s a lot of software on sale. Some of my favorite iOS apps at pretty good discount.

WTF and WHC Podcast Episodes to Catch

I’m not sure why but these two podcast episodes really stand out to me as special. Maybe it’s the way they define their own format. Maybe it’s the subject matter. Maybe it’s because they are offensive, endearing and insightful all at the same time. WTF: Louis C.K. from 2010 We Have Concerns: Work the Planck Both of these are good examples of breaking the expectations of a podcast. They can’t all be winners but it must feel pretty damn good to make something this unique.

New Pinboard Pricing Link

Pinboard will have a new pricing model in 2015, driven by the inability of people to read the current pricing page. Since the beginning, you paid once for a standard Pinboard account. The price for a perpetual license would go up based on the number of people that purchased it. The earlier you got in, the lower your one-time license cost. Pinboard also offers an annual service called an Archive account.

DEVONthink Use Cases in Academics Link

Christopher Mayo is an associate professor in communication. He knows how to use DEVONthink, that’s for sure. I particularly liked his example of using DEVONagent in conjunction with DEVONthink: Every night, my computer scours the web for research items, clips the pages as PDFs (I prefer this format), and puts the results into my DEVONthink database. When I wake up in the morning. I sync it all over to my iPad and I have the day’s reading.
