Erik and I nerd out about Slack on the latest episode of Technical Difficulties. If I sound overly excited about a group collaboration service, it’s probably because I am. The rate of change on some of my collaborative projects increased dramatically after we moved to Slack. The ability to share code and files while tracking tasks and discussing it all in real time is great. I’ve abandoned a lot of duct tape and twine holding together about 6 other disparate services.
In the latest episode of Technical Difficulties Erik and I discuss mid-level to low-level headphones and microphones. I focused more on listening to music and recording lectures and dictation while Erik has more interest in Skype calls and portability.
We also do some interesting experiments so that you don’t just have to take our words for it. The show was a pain to record and even more of a pain to edit but I think it shows the huge variability in microphones.
We took our time with the latest episode of Technical Difficulties and I think it turned out great. The episode is one of our periodic guest episodes featuring David Sparks. We talked a lot about iBooks and the process of writing the Field Guides. We also spent a good deal of time talking about our SciFi favorites and our mutual love for Star Wars.
As always, our show notes are stupidly detailed and I love them.
The latest episode of Technical Difficulties brings you 30 minutes of file syncing goodness. My geeky project of adding SFTP access to some of my Dropbox files easily expanded into a discussion of Google Drive, Plex Cloud Sync, and universal file access.
If you visit the extensive show notes, you’ll also get a great guest piece from @modernscientist talking in detail about BitTorrent Sync.
Boy, was this episode of Technical Difficulties fun to record. I have a crazy amount of little clipboard tricks on my Mac. I can just about get anything to anywhere in any format. Check out the show notes for the macros and a significant outline of the utilities we talked about.
On the last episode of Technical Difficulties, Erik and I discuss power management for electronics. We cover UPS, surge protectors, backup batteries and power adapters. It’s all about the electrons.
Setting up a home WiFi system sure does look easy on those Linksys router boxes. As with so many reasonably complex tasks, I think the project manager triangle is easily applied to building WiFi networks too. You can get a cheap network setup easily but it will probably not be very good.
On the latest Technical Difficulties episode we talk about building, configuring and maintaining a GOOD WiFi network with someone that knows a thing or three about the subject.
Erik, Mr. Potatowire and I have put together a couple of holiday editions of the Technical Difficulties podcast. We wanted to tackle two of the most common nerd headaches:
Setting up new iOS devices for the family Video conferencing with the family over the holidays Both shows remain true to our original design. They are short, on topic, and have crazy detailed show notes.
Erik and I dug into scanning from a Mac and iOS on the latest episode of Technical Difficulties.
The first rule of Gabe’s desk is that nothing goes on Gabe’s desk.
Damn straight.
Once a month our podcast Technical Difficulties will be doing an interview-like episode. Why not tackle the hardest problem most people tackle in their life on the first interview? Last week Merlin Mann joined us to discuss changing careers, either by accident or on purpose.
This is still a topic that fascinates me and I’m in awe of people like Merlin that successfully transition into multiple careers over and over. Also, check out the show notes.
