Cheaters System from the Illustrious Brett Link

Remember this post and the followup post here for creating cheat sheets? Well, Brett has done an amazing job taking a hack solution and turning it into something gorgeous. Please, go download it and revel in it's perfection. For the record, I don't consider it a "ripoff" as Brett describes. It's an evolution by someone better than me. That's awesome. There are only a couple dozen people in the world doing truly original work.

Hazel Import Into Aperture

Ever since Dropbox added photo download from iOS, I’ve switched off PhotoStream on my iPhone. I got tired of stupid or boring photos showing up in the stream. I decided I would configure the PhotoStream through Aperture. I had good intentions, but Dropbox has slurped over a hundred photos off and I have yet to add any to Aperture. It’s just too easy now to download and never add to Aperture

A Shortcut Viewer

I posted a tip for creating a Markdown cheat sheet a week ago. That solution used Marked to display the Markdown as formatted text. But I wasn't happy with needing to open and then close a Marked window. So I got to noodling around and remembered how useful Automator is. I've created a very simple Automator workflow that uses the URL viewer. Rather than loading a remote HTML file, it loads a local file that I created with Marked.

Fever to Pinboard

Ifttt is one of the best things I wish I could pay for. It's excellent at plugging holes in my various systems. For example, I now rely on Fever Reader for RSS. While it's comforting that I now own my favorited articles, I also wanted them in my Pinboard.in collection. IFTTT solves this by scraping the RSS feed of my Fever installation and adding the links to Pinboard. Bonus I also have an IFTTT rule for adding any links I post to Twitter.

Some Moom Tips

This is not a review. I've been relying on Moom for many months and these are examples of how I use it. If you're not using Moom then you probably spend a lot of time moving and tweaking windows on your Mac. Stop it. Just go get Moom and play along. Snap Shots One of my favorite uses of Moom is to create work environments and save them as Moom Snap Shots.

NVAlt Note Archiving with Hazel

I run this Hazel macro on my home server. It watches my NVAlt note folder. When a file is tagged with "archive" the file is moved to a note archive. It helps to clean up my Simplenote/Dropbox/NVAlt notes folder.1 Related Posts Where'd My TXT File Go Updates to the Simple Dropbox Blogging Engine Simplenote everywhere (including Dropbox) See this post for a description of how I link Simplenote and Dropbox through NVAlt.

Markdown Cheat Sheets and Marked

Want a quick and beautiful Markdown cheat sheet. Own Marked.app? Visit the Byword markdown guide and download the source markdown file.2 If you prefer, you can download Fletcher Penny's MultiMarkdown documentation and use it instead or in addition to the Byword documentation. Setup this AppleScript and trigger it with some kind of launcher (LaunchBar, Alfred, Keyboard Maestro, whatever floats your boat). tell application "Marked" activate open "/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/Dropbox/Notes/Byword Markdown Cheat Sheet.

Regrets

...and regarding Jeff Atwood's decision to leave StackExchange, I think this link from SwissMiss says it all: Top five regrets of the dying: I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
 I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Blog Syncing With ifttt

I’m not a huge fan of new and free web services. They do easily and often. Most of the time I’d rather build my own solution if I can. Hypocritically, I love ifttt (If This Then That) for some background syncing functions. For example I have a couple of rules syncing Pinboard.in and Instapaper.1 Whenever I tag something in Pinboard with “instapaper” it is automatically added to Instapaper. I found another great use that I probably would not spend time developing myself.

Google Advanced Image Search

If you're looking for the option in Google to search only images with copyright permissions, they removed it from the search results page. Now it is accessed at the advanced image search page. Getty Images is still the easiest way to find royalty-free images that I know of. "Google, now with more clicks"
