Hey, speaking of ignorant monsters putting their fame above all else, Google searches aren't equivalent to years of hard work. This is a very good article about the problem of self educating using nothing but a web browser.
To become a real expert in a field requires paying dues that go beyond doing some searches on Google and finding studies that confirm your preexisting beliefs.
Bingo. There are a lot of things in the world that are a result of hard work done for a very long time.
For an anonymous guy, Dr. Drang sure gets around. What a great job Stephen Hackett did with this interview. 1
Yeah, I'm pretty proud of that title. ↩
Unless they intend to push the “What What (In the Butt)” case to the Supreme Court, though, no money is forthcoming.
In all seriousness, this is good news. It's also proof that real life is far weirder than any fiction.
This looks really good to me right about now. I've been futzing with WordPress and PHP for three weeks. Working in pure HTML, CSS and Markdown sounds great.
Just look at how Prose handles the Yaml header in the editor.
I wrote this post about 6 months ago in consideration of advertising and policies here at Macdrifter.com.
I worry that if I start to make money off of advertising then it becomes work. It subconsciously influences what and why I post.

At that time, I added what I called an "endorsement" to the sidebar. An unpaid ad for something I really like. I'm still running the same endorsement for Marked because it's still awesome.
I think the majority of tech-media writers bought the same discounted dictionary at the dollar-store. My dictionary has a very different definition of the word "confirmed"
IFTTT has received a major update (announcement here). While it provides a visual update it also added some new actions. I find the new channel for interacting with a physical device very interesting:
Today marks our first foray into the physical world. Now IFTTT works with Belkin’s WeMo devices! WeMo is a family of simple, ingenious products that allow you to control home electronics from anywhere. Turn them on or off, trigger them with motion, even put them on a schedule.
I've finally corrected a long-standing problem here at Macdrifter.com. Prior to last night, linked article titles did not point to the URL for the external article. This has bothered me for awhile but I had some technical limitations keeping me from making the change. Things change, and this site now does linked articles correctly on the front page and in the RSS feed. I'm not using a WordPress plugin. The linked list behavior is all custom code.
I really enjoy Zeldman's show and think he is very smart. On the other hand, I've never heard so much stammering trying to justify Readabilities business. I would have respected the opinions more if both he and Richard Ziade (CEO of Readability) were just honest. They should just say: "we don't care what anyone thinks. Readability will make money anyway they want off of the web. Suck it." That's a stand, not a justification.
I mentioned that Twitter links can be piped to Pinboard.in bookmarks by way of IFTTT. It's a simple recipe. Links posted by people I follow are automatically added to Pinboard with the tag "twitterlink". It's a nice way to catch stuff I might have missed while away from Twitter. It's also easy to filter by tag and quickly browse and delete.
Here's the simple IFTTT recipe:
I also like that the IFTTT Twitter component has options for inserting additional information about the link source, like the Tweet text and user name.
